Mental Description:
Personality: Captain Williams is a true blue Edrangic soldier, painfully upstanding and could be seen as one of the most gentlemanly gentleman officer ever. He is courteous and understanding, never the one to cause any fights with anyone and is usually the authority figure who quells any discordance in his brigade. His leadership skills are evident from the actions and words of his brigade, who they respect and admire very deeply for his attitude towards each of them, knowing every single person in his brigade by name and always being the one whom they share all their secrets with.
His fascination with machinery and gears has drawn him into the war, though now that he is an active participant of it, Williams tries to avoid any mention of the War in the few holidays he receives, preferring to spend those days away from the noises of war and retreat into a quiet and empty place to doodle anything that comes into mind.
Even though Williams may be a war-hardened soldier, the sights that he has seen as the front line of the army affects him deeply, which causes him to speak softly in a warm tone as to try to compensate for the bloody screaming of the enemies and the loud rattling of the machinery which he dearly loves. The squalor and poverty which lies just behind the shining exterior of the Edrangeon cities causes Williams to be ashamed of the government, even though he may follow all orders that come from them, and he tries to relieve the sadness he feels for his fellow countrymen by donating anonymously to all those unions that care for the women and children in the horrid conditions of the factories since he knows exactly how it was like to live in such squalid conditions.
His extremely dry humor and pessimistic outlook on life sprouts from the dislike he has of the war, and any jokes cracked about it in his brigade will receive a sharp order in reply. His peers and elder officers see him as a very determined individual, willing to carry out any commands directed at him even though it may cost him his safety, but not of the men under his orders. This type of mindset has carried Williams high into the ranks of the army, earning him the title of Captain and his own Stormwalker brigade in a mere two years that he joined the Military, becoming one of the youngest Captains ever in the Edrangic Military.
The stress and sickening environment of the battle fields which he is exposed to almost daily has taken its toll on his exterior look, having many people comment that he seems "wiser beyond his years" and older than he really is by the serious expression he usually wears and the gauntness of his face.
Despite his gentlemanly charms and gallant attitude which causes many girls to gravitate towards him, Williams has no interest in settling down to make a family before the war is completely over and peace again reigns over the continent. He prefers for most people to call him Captain Williams, as those who call him James are either his dear personal friends or family members.
Bio: Born and raised on a small farm at the foot of the mountains in Edrangeon, Williams was the single point of pride and joy for his father. His mother had died as she gave birth to him and the two of them, his father and himself, were hard-pressed to coax enough food out of the hard ground for the annual taxes and for themselves. Life was hard indeed, but the bitter conditions of the wind-swept steppes toughed Williams to the point that he would be working long after his father had already retired. The various farm machinery that they had to use to plow and turn the stony ground fascinated Williams from a very young age, often perching on them like a small bird and running his fingers over the small parts and gears of the huge machines. This love was not overlooked by his father, who realized that the boy had a talent for driving machines from the countless times Williams had begged his father to allow him to pilot those machinery, hoarding enough of their meager savings to give the boy a sketchbook for his eighth birthday. Williams absolutely loved the sketchbook, always being found drawing in it after the day's work had ended of the various parts of the machines and sometimes even the few animals that they kept.
At Williams' fourteenth year however, the two were struggling to make end's meet. Taxes became even more harsher as the war raged on far away, causing them to have hardly enough money to provide themselves with anything to eat. By the summer, they were starving and Williams' father made the heart-wrenching decision to sell the farm and move to Valarel, seeing the various propaganda for the good life the workers had there. As they came to the city, both of them were amazed by the beauty of the city. Williams was quite taken by the gallant soldiers who marched throughout the cities in their walkers and just the sheer amount of machinery present in the huge city. Fortunately for his father and him, they found jobs printing the newspapers that circulated news in the city and out into other cities. Williams was particularly fond of the huge machine that did the actual work as he fed it paper, nicknaming it the "Spider" because of the various arms that typed out the words onto the paper. With this job, they managed to scavenge some money by the time Williams was sixteen and was able to afford living in an apartment instead of under the eaves of the newspaper house.
The impression left upon Williams from the soldiers never ceased, and he used some the hard-earned money to bribe a friendly neighboring soldier, who was a Scout for one of the Goliaths and often drunk, to teach him how to pilot a walker. The soldier, glad to get any money he could get, agreed to teach Williams how to use his Scout. Within a few months, Williams was simply intoxicated with the feeling of piloting a Walker and was extremely eager to join the Military as soon as possible. This mindset changed however as the kind next-door soldier was struck down by a Rugoba and all that was left was the mangled remains of his goggles and helmet which was sent to Williams since the soldier had no one else for family. The excitement died down within him and in its place, a fire of determination to avenge the man's death and defend his country from those savage beasts was kindled instead.
By the time Williams was eighteen, he was finally eligible to enroll into the Military and was given the role of a Scout pilot from the already extensive training he received beforehand. This advantage allowed him to surpass many of his peers, many having little to no experiences with actually using war machines, since they had worked in factories feeding items into the machines there. His love and skill for piloting did not go unnoticed by his superiors and by the time he was nineteen, Williams was placed into the Stormwalker brigade. The feeling of piloting a Stormwalker was worlds away from a Scout, and Williams absolutely loved it, the bobbing motion of the Stormwalker making him feel completely at ease. Then, at a major battle in the highlands between Edrangeon and Draceleon, Williams' brigade Captain was mauled to death by Daghurs just above Williams' shoulders, for the current Captain was a commander as was necessary for all Stormwalker Captains, leaving Williams to pilot the Stormwalker without the convenient eyes of another person. Williams then charged into the tangle with the rest of the brigade naturally following him and many Edrangic lives were lost that day, Williams' brigade being especially hard-hit with half of the Stormwalkers decimated and the men killed. The lucky survivors included Williams, who miraculously survived with only a few bruises from being jolted around in his machine, and a new Captain was ordered to be chosen, for there was little time until the brigade would be sent out again.
The remaining men voted Williams in with a huge count, and the sudden discovery that he was the new Captain was appalling to Williams. He felt that he was not ready for the role and it was too much, but there was no one else who wanted the role and was adeptly suited for it. The guilt that he felt for unintentionally leading his fellow soldiers to be slaughtered weighed down upon him, but Williams knew that he had to accept the role and resigned himself to the position.
In the two years that he has led the brigade, Williams had been wary enough never to repeat the incident again and suffer such a large casualty, managing to keep most of the men alive though the battles of the past and the guilt of the incident that earned him the position of Captain still haunt him like his shadow, never leaving his mind even in his happiest moments.
Specialties: Excellent at piloting walkers such as Stormwalkers and Scouts; also being extremely adept with swords such as sabers and rapiers, his favorite weapon to use being bayonets since they allow him to fire from a long-range and also to protect himself in the short-range; leadership skills, Williams has a very honed talent at commanding others, not though the use of terror but of reason and persuasion, which is emphasized by the always polite tone he uses for everyone, even though who surely do not deserve such civility
Occupation: Stormwalker pilot and/or commander, Captain of the 5th Edrangic Stormwalker Brigade
Weaknesses/Fears:
- Stress/Guilt: Having the lives of over twenty soldiers in his order, the worry and guilt that some of them may never come home again worries him daily, while the deaths of those who have passed on haunts his dreams at night. This makes him an insomniac for the most part and the weariness of his job can be sometimes noticeable in the slump of his shoulders and the thinness of his face, especially after a major battle with many lives lost.
- Fires/Malfunctions: Knowing that his life depends on the functionality of his Stormwalker, any risks or dangers posed to his machinery also affects him too. If a fire or malfunction were to occur while he and his crew were to be occupying it, there would be little to no chance of escaping and surviving, for either the flames would consume them all rapidly or the Draceleon forces would come and destroy them all while he and his crew were trapped inside the machine.
- Sleep: Williams is an extremely light sleeper and any type of noise or disturbance will awaken him almost immediately. He requires for complete silence and darkness to be able to descend into slumber and even then, rest is not guaranteed since he often has disturbing dreams that will cause him to only gain a few hours of sleep, much less then he is supposed to.
Likes:
- Drawing/Doodling: A major stress reliever for Williams, he will doodle on any type of paper that happens to be in his vicinity of what currently occupies his mind, which is either his walker or Evols that he has recently met in battles. He keeps all of his drawings in a notebook that he carries around with him constantly.
- Piloting: With his Stormwalker, Williams feels the most comfortable in it for he feels that his walker is just an extension of his limbs and just a part of him. It can allow him to just concentrate on controlling the machine, instead of worrying about other troubles that would plague him otherwise.
- Tea: One of the only things that motivate him in the morning and refresh him throughout the day, Williams has a "slight" addiction to that drink, especially black tea. He would rather be drinking tea than alcohol, and carries tea in his canteen instead of water since he needs the caffeine that the drink provides him.
- Strawberries: A rare delicacy in Edrangeon and even more rare in Valarel, Williams and his father have a particularly fond taste for those plump red fruits. Whenever Williams get the chance, he will venture into the Underground to find someone who would smuggle in strawberries from Draceleon, willing to pay outrageous prices for them.
Dislikes:
- Arrogance: Any sort of snarky or hubristic comment or attitude directed towards him or any member of the crew will not be tolerated by Williams, and strict disciplinary actions will be taken to ensure that no one will be discriminated nor be disgraced by the foolish actions of their fellow comrades.
- Factories: The heat and the continuous noises of the machinery gives Williams headaches if he were to stay in there for so long, while the sorrowful looks of the unprivileged workers causes Williams to feel guilty about the condition of life that he enjoys for being a high ranking officer since he was just like them when he was younger.
- Grafts: Even though Williams may not hate them, he has an innate distrust of the Grafts and Evols, as most Clankers do, from the animalistic savagery they exhibit in battle and the widespread belief that they are not meant to be made since it violates the natural laws of evolution.
- Rain: Williams severely dislikes rain since it corrodes parts of his Stormwalker, making it a hassle to have to check every part of the machine for type of rusting. He also does not like how it always manages to leak into everything, sometimes ruining his carefully done notes and sketches.
